What heat and humidity do to a door
Henderson summers are long and hot, with average July highs around 105°F, and the temperature swing between afternoon and night is large. Door slabs, frames and trim expand and contract with heat and moisture, and the movement is greatest on doors that face south or west. Wood absorbs moisture and swells during monsoon season or when indoor humidity rises, and vinyl, aluminum and fiberglass can shift or warp in strong heat. Even a small shift pushes a door out of alignment.
Read the symptoms
Where the door rubs tells you what is wrong. Rubbing at the top corner on the latch side usually means the door has sagged on its hinges. Rubbing along the latch edge can be swelling or a shifted frame. A door that closes but will not latch is often a strike plate that no longer lines up. A visible gap along the top or one side suggests the frame has moved, and a door that sticks only in summer often points to moisture.
Quick checks you can do first
Tighten the hinge screws — loose screws are the most common cause of a sagging door. If the screw holes are stripped, longer screws that reach the framing often solve it. Look for paint or finish build-up on the edges and check that the strike plate lines up with the latch. Clean sliding door tracks and lubricate them with a silicone spray rather than oil. Avoid planing the door until you know why it rubs, because trimming a swollen door can leave a gap in winter.
Repairs that actually last
Depending on the cause, a proper repair can mean adjusting or replacing hinges, re-setting the strike plate, shimming the frame back into alignment, replacing worn weatherstripping and sweeps, sealing the unfinished top and bottom edges of a wood door, or trimming a swollen door slightly. Exterior doors also need good seals to keep heat, dust and pests out. See our door repair and caulking and weatherproofing services in Henderson.
When to replace instead of repair
Replace the door when the slab is warped, rotted or delaminating, when the frame is damaged beyond repair, or when the same door keeps failing. A new, properly hung door with fresh seals is often the most economical fix for an old exterior door. If the door is visible from the street, check whether your HOA requires approval for the style and color first — our Henderson HOA approval guide explains how. Then see door replacement in Henderson.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my door stick only in summer?
Usually because of moisture. Wood swells with humidity, and heat can shift frames. Checking the hinges and sealing the unfinished edges often fixes it, and we can diagnose the exact cause in a short visit.
Should I sand or plane my sticking door?
Not as a first step. Find out why it sticks first: tightening hinges or adjusting the strike plate often solves it without removing wood, and trimming a swollen door can leave a gap when the weather changes.
