Why tile cracks
Tile itself is hard but brittle, so cracks almost always come from what is underneath or around it. The usual causes are impact from a dropped heavy object, a hollow spot where the tile was not fully bonded, movement in the slab or framing, and moisture getting under the tile. A single cracked tile with an obvious cause is usually a simple repair. A line of cracks across several tiles can mean the floor is moving, and that should be looked at before anything is replaced.
Grout, caulk and hard water
Henderson's hard water leaves mineral haze and stains on grout, tile and glass, and unsealed cement-based grout absorbs both stains and moisture. Grout lines also crack and crumble where the floor or wall flexes. At corners, where tile meets a tub or counter, and anywhere two surfaces meet, flexible caulk should be used instead of grout, because grout cannot flex and will crack. See our grout and caulk service in Henderson for regrouting and recaulking.
How a proper tile repair is done
A durable repair follows a few steps: find the cause, carefully remove the damaged tile and old grout without harming the surrounding tiles, clean and check the surface underneath, set a new tile with the right adhesive, let it cure, then regrout and seal. Matching is the hardest part. If you saved spare tiles from the original installation, tell us. Otherwise we try to find an exact or close match, or suggest a blend that looks intentional. See tile repair in Henderson.
Showers and wet areas
Cracked tile or failing grout in a shower should not wait, because water that gets behind the tile can damage the wall. Signs to watch for include soft or spongy spots, loose tiles, grout that keeps crumbling, discolored caulk and musty smells. If you suspect water behind the wall, stop using the shower and have it checked.
Sealing and maintenance
Most cement-based grout benefits from sealing, which makes it more resistant to stains and moisture; follow the manufacturer's directions for the sealer you use. Wipe up spills, clean with a pH-neutral cleaner, and avoid harsh acids on natural stone. For glass shower doors, squeegee after use to keep hard-water spots from setting.
When it is time to retile
If many tiles are cracked, loose or hollow, or the cause is movement that cannot be corrected, the honest answer is that the job has outgrown repair scope: replacing a whole surface is retiling, and that belongs to a licensed tile contractor. What we do is repair-scope work — individual cracked or loose tiles and small sections where the surface underneath is sound. If your existing tile needs work, see tile repair in Henderson, and read about how hard water affects faucets, toilets and disposals too. To be plain: we don't retile whole surfaces — that belongs to a licensed tile contractor. We repair tile by tile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you replace just one cracked tile?
Often, yes. We carefully remove the tile, check what is underneath, set a new one and regrout. The result depends on finding a matching tile, so keep any spares from the original installation.
Why is my grout turning gray or crumbling?
Gray or stained grout is usually dirt, soap film or mineral deposits, while crumbling grout is a sign of movement or age. Cleaning and sealing helps with stains; crumbling grout needs to be removed and replaced.
