Not all flooring handles the Las Vegas climate well. With summer temperatures regularly above 110ยฐF, low humidity, UV exposure through windows, and hard water, your flooring choice in Las Vegas matters more than it would in most cities. Here's what actually holds up.
Las Vegas homes face a unique combination of stressors: extreme heat cycling (cold air conditioning vs. blazing outdoor temps), very low humidity that can shrink natural materials, intense UV through large windows, and hard water that leaves mineral deposits on tiles. Not every flooring material is up to the task.
LVP has become the most popular flooring in Las Vegas homes for good reason. It's waterproof, stable in heat and humidity swings, extremely durable, and affordable. Quality LVP (look for 20mil+ wear layer and attached underlayment) handles everything Las Vegas throws at it.
Tile is the original Las Vegas flooring and still one of the best choices. It stays cool underfoot, handles moisture perfectly, and lasts indefinitely with proper grout maintenance. Large-format tiles (24x24 or bigger) are trending and look stunning in desert-style homes.
Laminate is affordable and looks great initially, but standard laminate is not waterproof and can buckle in Las Vegas heat if installed without adequate expansion gaps or exposed to moisture. If you choose laminate, go for a waterproof core product and ensure proper installation.
Solid hardwood is not recommended for most Las Vegas homes. The extreme humidity swings โ from 10% in summer to higher in monsoon season โ cause solid wood to expand and contract significantly, leading to gaps, cupping, and squeaking. If you love the look of wood, LVP or engineered hardwood are far better choices here.
Engineered hardwood handles Las Vegas conditions much better than solid hardwood. The cross-ply construction resists expansion and contraction, while the real wood veneer gives you the authentic look. Avoid installing it in bathrooms or high-moisture areas.
| Room | Best Choice | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Living Room | LVP or Engineered Hardwood | Solid Hardwood |
| Bedrooms | LVP or Carpet | Solid Hardwood |
| Kitchen | LVP or Tile | Solid Hardwood, basic Laminate |
| Bathrooms | Tile or 100% Waterproof LVP | Laminate, Hardwood |
| Entryway | Tile or LVP | Carpet |
| Garage | Epoxy Coating or Tile | LVP (too hot in summer) |
Always acclimate flooring before installation. Bring materials inside and let them adjust to the home's temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours. In our dry desert climate, this prevents gaps from forming after installation.
Leave proper expansion gaps โ especially critical in Las Vegas where temperature swings are extreme. Improper gapping causes buckling, especially in rooms that get direct sun exposure through west-facing windows.
Use the right underlayment. A quality moisture barrier underlayment is essential in Las Vegas slab-on-grade homes (which is most of them). We include this in every flooring installation we do.
